Team Surrey Volleyball Club have enjoyed a truly successful season which has included consistently strong BUCS performances in addition to significant progress in other areas including other competitions, PlaySport and sponsorship.
Here’s a full overview of the season from the club themselves…
“This year the volleyball club have made tremendous strides not only in their BUCS games, but also recreationally and with the IMS sessions. Last year the club fell dormant, but the club has come back in full swing. We have had a very successful BUCS season with both Women’s teams potentially having the opportunity in being promoted in the league. The Women’s 1 also reached the semi-finals in the conference cup.
Furthermore, the club entered a Men’s team and a Women’s team into the National Student Cup competition run by Volleyball England, where all universities within England can enter a team to win bragging rights and a trophy.
After a challenging qualifying round in November 2022, our Women’s team progressed through to the National Student Cup Finals held in Norwich, after two days filled with matches the team placed 14th. The team played particularly well in their hard pool in the group stages. They even won a set against Cambridge, the team who ended up finishing second.
With Volleyball England, we have a unique opportunity for individuals to become Higher Education Officers (activators) to run our recreational sessions, these sessions have become extremely popular this year, every session is sold out. We have also had to expand our IMS league adding additional time to accommodate the large number of individuals wanting to play.
This year we have also entered into the Surrey Volleyball League, this means that we have additional games outside BUCS, competing on weekends and weekdays to play against other clubs around Surrey. Both the Women’s and Men’s team are performing to a very high level in the league tables. This is a great opportunity for individuals who do not normally get a lot of playing time in BUCS matches to improve their skills.
We have also organised many friendly matches against other universities to allow members the opportunity to play.
Finally, the committee this year has also gone above and beyond for its members. The club is currently in the midst of finalising a sponsorship deal with a Bar in Town, we are looking forward to this as it will aid the club in expanding. We are on target to achieve Stars and the Gold RAG award. We have acquired hundreds of volunteering hours, engaged in numerous campaigns and have tried our best as a club to do our part for the community at The University of Surrey.
It is difficult at times to summarise everything we have achieved this year, however what I will say is this, thank you to all the members who have made this happen and to the committee members who have worked countless hours preparing and organising all these fantastic opportunities.”
