The BUCS Awards celebrate the very best of university sport each season and Surrey boasts three shortlisted entries following a record 264 nominations from universities across the UK.
The shortlisted entries include Team Surrey Student Sport for Participation Programme of the Year, Elliott Lewis for Coach of the Year and Rachael Crawford for the Special Recognition Award.
Team Surrey Student Sport was shortlisted for Participation Programme of the Year in recognition of the programme’s innovative participation opportunities including the SurreyMoves+ physical activity app, Access Fund, GradSport and ClubSport which have all actively improved the provision for students, staff and community.
The tagline ‘Move | Play | Perform’ embodies Team Surrey’s sport and physical activity programme by facilitating participant engagement in activities that meet their individual ability, experience, and interest.
For the individual awards, Elliott Lewis was shortlisted for Coach of the Year on the back of his outstanding contribution to coaching and club management as Team Surrey’s Rugby Programme Coordinator and Head Coach.
Elliott’s expert coaching and individualised player support has guided the rugby squads towards exceeding on-pitch targets, while crucially ensuring that the three rugby clubs are united.
Meanwhile, Rachael Crawford was shortlisted for the Special Recognition Award for her exceptional contribution to the University of Surrey Volleyball Club in her roles as President, Assistant Coach to the men’s first team and Higher Education Volleyball Officer.
Rachael’s passionate leadership has seen her encourage more students to try out volleyball by reducing barriers to the sport, while also making a notable impact in the local community.
The overall winners will be announced at the Awards Night on Thursday 13th July at University of Leeds.
