Welcome to the latest edition of our Scholars Q&A! In this weekly feature, we speak to a selection of our Team Surrey scholars to hear about their experiences and achievements within university sport and beyond.
George Morris is about to graduate from the university following the conclusion of his Sport and Exercise Science course, but before his departure he features in the latest Scholars Q&A as he reflects on his time in Surrey and sets out his targets for 2022.
“As a final year Sport and Exercise Science student, I am about to graduate from the university. Things have been busy recently, meeting deadlines, finishing pieces of work and juggling this alongside my training.”
“My fencing career began when I was 9 years old at my local fencing club. I thought I would give the sport a try, and have been hooked ever since.”
“My main aim for 2022 is a Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship team medal for Wales. I have medals for the Commonwealth Championships in both U17 and U20 age groups, I would like a senior medal to complete the set. I would also like to win the British Senior Championships in 2021/22.”
“The University has massively supported my fencing. Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to my understanding course directors (Dr Julie Hunt & Dr Ralph Manders) and to my personal tutor (Dr Andrew Hulton) for assisting in supporting any extenuating circumstances, if needed. Then to Team Surrey for financial support, without which I would find it very difficult to have trained to the extent of which I have during my time at the university, and strength and conditioning support – which has further boosted my sports performance.”
“Surrey is a brilliant university. I would recommend the sport and exercise science course to anyone interested in human performance and the nitty gritty science that underlines all sporting performance, and if you are an aspiring sportsperson this is definitely the university for you, with all of the potential support from Team Surrey.”
“My highlight of my time at Surrey is quite plain and simply the Sport and Exercise Science course.”
Sporting role model? “Johnny Wilkinson.”
Favourite meal? “Spaghetti Bolognese.”
Favourite lockdown workout? “A 2-3 hour long run.”
Favourite song for exercising/training? “Can’t remember the last time I listen to music whilst exercising.”
Best thing about Surrey? “Everything!“
