A total of 30 University of Surrey students ventured north to compete at the most anticipated rowing event in the BUCS calendar.

With competitors taking part in 11 events from beginner to championship level, the weekend presented a fantastic opportunity for Club members to test themselves. Over the course of the weekend the Club brought home a series of impressive results.

The men's beginner 8+ made it to the A-finals, eventually placing 5th in the country out of 35 crews. In similar fashion, the women's intermediate 8+ placed 10th in the country out of 36 crews, whilst the intermediate A quad placed 8th out of 35 crews.

The most notable success from the weekend came in the championship 2-, with University of Surrey sports scholar George Stewart and VP Activity Ali Douglass taking centre stage. The pair managed to overcome all other opposition to secure gold for Surrey, the first championship gold in the Club's illustrious history.

We caught up with Sophie Hossack, University of Surrey Boat Club President 2018/19, to learn more about the Club's remarkable achievements. "This has been the most successful BUCS Regatta the Club has ever attended." "Crews were consistently in the mix with, and challenging, the top rowing universities and turned heads for performances on the water and professionalism off it."

Hossack added, "This is a credit to the hard work our coaches, Sam Tuck and Iona Riley, and our committee, particularly President Ellie Stevens, have put into the Club." Looking forward, the Club will be heading to Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta later this year, hoping to pick up more honours.
